Swimming Ear Plugs & Nose Clips

Swimming Ear Plugs: Finding the Right Fit

Not all ear plugs are built the same, and the difference matters in the water. Our range covers pre-moulded ergonomic designs, soft silicone options and adjustable band-style plugs, each suited to different ear shapes and training frequencies. Pre-moulded plugs like those in the Speedo Biofuse range conform to the contour of the ear canal without requiring a forceful insert, making them comfortable for swimmers who train multiple times a week. Softer putty-style plugs offer a custom-fit seal suited to swimmers with narrower or irregularly shaped ear canals. Amanzi's Calypso ear band takes a different approach entirely, sitting across the outside of the ear rather than inside it, which suits swimmers who find in-canal plugs uncomfortable.

Material matters alongside shape. Silicone plugs are durable, reusable and easy to clean. Foam plugs offer a softer feel but typically have a shorter lifespan with regular chlorine exposure. Our range from Speedo, Arena, TYR, Amanzi, Zoggs, Nike, Finis, and Maru View covers many different types of earplugs across adult and junior sizing.

Nose Clips: What to Look for Before You Buy

A nose clip needs to stay in place from warm-up to the final turn. The most common failure point is a clip that sits correctly at rest but shifts under the water pressure of a dive or push-off. Competitive nose clips, including those from Arena Amanzi's competition range, use a firmer spring construction specifically designed to maintain contact through race-start impact. General training clips use a lighter spring that is more comfortable over long sessions but may not hold as reliably under competition conditions.

Nose clip sizing is often overlooked. A clip fitted for a narrow nose bridge on a model with a wider span will sit proud of the face rather than sealing against it. Our range from Arena, Speedo, TYR, Amanzi Zoggs covers multiple bridge widths. Junior-specific options are proportioned for smaller faces and lighter spring pressure suited to younger swimmers.

Ear Plugs for Specific Needs

Swimmers who have been advised to keep water out of the ear canal for medical reasons need a higher-seal option than a standard training plug. The Speedo Biofuse Aquatic Earplugs and similar close-fit designs create a stronger water barrier than open-cell foam alternatives. If you are buying for this specific requirement, our swimwear experts are available to advise on the options best suited to your situation before you purchase.

For open water swimmers, earplugs serve an additional function: thermal protection in cold water. Neoprene-lined band designs retain warmth around the ear as well as blocking water entry, which matters for outdoor swimming in UK conditions. Our range includes options suited to cold-water use alongside standard pool plugs.

Aftercare

Rinse ear plugs in clean water after every session and allow to air dry fully before storing. Avoid leaving silicone plugs in direct sunlight for extended periods. Nose clips benefit from the same rinse routine. Storing both in a small protective case or zip pouch keeps them clean and extends their effective lifespan considerably.

Choosing Between Ear Plugs Ear Bands

The fundamental difference is contact point. In-canal plugs create a seal inside the ear canal itself and are the most effective option for keeping water out of the ear completely. Ear bands sit across the outer ear and provide a secondary barrier that reduces water entry without requiring insertion. Ear bands are the first choice for young children, swimmers with very narrow canals who find insertion plugs uncomfortable, and those who have been fitted with grommets where pressure inside the canal is contraindicated. If you are unsure which is appropriate for your specific situation, contact our swimwear experts before purchasing.

Junior Ear Plugs Nose Clips

Children's ear and nose anatomy requires specifically proportioned products. Adult earplugs inserted into children's ear canals apply pressure to a smaller, more sensitive canal structure that can cause discomfort even before any seal is achieved. Junior earplugs are proportioned for children's ear anatomy with softer insertion tips and reduced plug diameter. Junior nose clips use a lighter spring tension calibrated for narrower nose bridges and a lighter face structure. Buying the appropriate junior product rather than trimming or adapting an adult version is always the right approach.

When to Replace Ear Plugs Nose Clips

Silicone ear plugs should be replaced when they no longer hold their shape after insertion, when the surface becomes sticky or tacky from chlorine degradation, or when they consistently admit water despite correct placement. A degraded silicone plug often looks fine visually while no longer providing a functional seal. Nose clips should be replaced when the spring tension noticeably softens, when the nose pads crack or detach, or when the clip no longer stays in place during a competition start. For regular training swimmers, replacing both items at the start of each season is good practice regardless of visible wear.

Cross-Category Guidance: Building Your Ear Nose Protection Kit

For competitive backstroke specialists and butterfly swimmers, the combination of a well-fitted nose clip and silicone ear plugs handles the two most common water entry points in these strokes. For open water swimmers, adding neoprene ear protection alongside standard silicone plugs addresses both water entry and thermal exposure. For leisure swimmers prone to outer ear irritation, an ear band rather than an in-canal plug often resolves the issue without any clinical intervention.
